(1,2,3) Desta forma, o colesterol \u00e9 necess\u00e1rio \u00e0<br \/>vida e para a sa\u00fade. Para circular no sangue necessita<br \/>de se juntar a determinadas prote\u00ednas, as lipoprote\u00ednas,<br \/>sendo as mais comuns a lipoprote\u00edna de baixa densidade<br \/>(LDL) e a lipoprote\u00edna de alta densidade (HDL). (3) Estas<br \/>lipoprote\u00ednas transportam o colesterol de e para as<br \/>c\u00e9lulas. (4) Como o LDL contribui para a acumula\u00e7\u00e3o de<br \/>gordura nas art\u00e9rias, (aterosclerose) ele \u00e9 muitas vezes<br \/>designado por \u201cmau\u201d colesterol. O HDL transporta uma<br \/>fra\u00e7\u00e3o do LDL das art\u00e9rias para o f\u00edgado, onde \u00e9<br \/>metabolizado e eliminado, por isso o HDL \u00e9 considerado<br \/>o colesterol \u201cBom\u201d. Este risco aumenta tamb\u00e9m com um n\u00edvel<br \/>elevado de triglic\u00e9ridos (gordura mais comum do<br \/>organismo, combinado com colesterol LDL elevado<br \/>ou colesterol HDL baixo. (4)<br \/>Quando as placas de gordura acumulam, torna-se<br \/>mais dif\u00edcil para o cora\u00e7\u00e3o fazer circular o sangue<br \/>e o oxig\u00e9nio, o que pode causar angina (quadro<br \/>de dor no peito ou falta de ar com o aumento do<br \/>esfor\u00e7o) resultante da doen\u00e7a coron\u00e1ria, na qual o<br \/>m\u00fasculo card\u00edaco n\u00e3o recebe o sangue de que<br \/>necessita.(4) Se se formar um co\u00e1gulo sangu\u00edneo<br \/>pode originar um acidente vascular cerebral ou um<br \/>ataque card\u00edaco.<br \/>A homeostasia do colesterol \u00e9 vital para um<br \/>funcionamento celular e sist\u00e9mico adequado. O<br \/>desequil\u00edbrio do colesterol \u00e9 a base n\u00e3o s\u00f3 das<br \/>doen\u00e7as cardiovasculares, mas tamb\u00e9m de um<br \/>n\u00famero crescente de outras doen\u00e7as, como as<br \/>doen\u00e7as neurodegenerativas e os cancros.
